August 24-28, 2020

Week one has come to a close, and I am grateful for all of the technical and organizational help you are providing at home. I am hearing from the district that it is a good idea to update Teams if your child is still having glitches on that platform. I explained to the students that you may need to drive to a Fresno Unified parking lot and get onto their wifi for it to update properly.

I apologize that these newsletters are SO long, but the better informed you are, the smoother this process will go. I thank you for taking time to read through them and also looking over our Weekly Lesson Plans and Weekly Video Message. (Those are found in different tabs of our class website, mrshuene.com)

We will be on a "normal" schedule this week. Please make sure your child is logging on for all three of our live sessions each day, as attendance depends on them being present at each one. As a reminder, our sessions are from 9:00-9:45, 10:15-11:00, 11:45-12:30. In addition to our live sessions, I will be holding office hours from 12:45-1:30 daily. This is a great time for your child to drop in and ask questions. They are not required to attend this time; it is just an opportunity for them to receive help.

The independent work your child is being assigned should be completed during the school day. This is not homework; it is extension work that we would usually be completing in class, but we need to make it independent since our live sessions are so short. If they start their work right after our 12:30 session, they can come to my office hours if there are any questions or if they need clarification. Due dates are super important since the work completed on one day may need to be finished before being able to participate in discussions the next day.

I would like to encourage you to have your child take you on a tour of their class Teams account. You can see the assignments they have created, any feedback, their calendared meetings, and grades they have received. You can also read their chat to see any conversations we have had or that they have had with other students. This is truly our virtual "classroom" and it may be fun for them to show you around.

This week, the students will be taking both the math and language arts i-Ready assessments. We will devote a 45 minute class period to taking each one, but they typically take longer than that. The students are going to be instructed to work on finishing the assessment independently. Please make sure they do not receive any help, as this test determines their i-Ready pathway, and it won't match their needs if it isn't their work. This is a diagnostic test and will take them to the point where they are getting problems incorrect in order to find their independent instructional level.

If your child is interested in joining Melodies, our Manchester choir, be on the lookout for an Actionaly message from Mrs. Gengozian.

I think this is all for now. :-) Make sure to keep an eye on your email for Actionaly message updates.

Appreciating your partnership in our virtual learning,

Lanie Huene
